Friends Not Food: Why Eating Turkeys is Wrong
LOHV

Today turkeys are cruelly confined, mutilated, and condemned to a life of degradation, loneliness, pain, and terror of slaughter. Most turkeys raised for consumption are unable to spread their wings or even turn around.

Turkeys raised for food are painfully lame and obese, mutilated at birth, sexually abused to reproduce, and then tortured to death.

How can any thoughts of "giving thanks" even remotely be associated with the lone dead animal at the center of your table. It is simply wrong.

There are many delicious options for enjoying the holidays without contributing to the death of one of these beautiful birds. While we do not feel, with all of the delicious foods available, that there must be a "substitute" for a turkey dinner, there are delicious alternative foods such as Tofurky, which can serve as a main dish for your holiday meals. For some yummy Thanksgiving recipes check out Mercy for Animals' recipes here. Have a favorite vegan holiday recipe? Send it to us and we will assemble an AFA Favorite Vegan Holiday Recipes page for our own website.

On behalf of all inquisitive, sensitive, beautiful, and playful turkeys, we at AFA wish you a peaceful, cruelty-free holiday season.

Your Letters Helped!
Judge Sends Appleton Man to Jail for Hanging Dog
Alliance for Animals members attended the sentencing of Eric Shattuck, the man convicted of killing his dog by hanging him in his garage. Read story here. It was quite obvious that the letters (" numerous letters; too many to count" said Judge Metropulos) sent to the judge played an important part in the sentencing. So thank you to those of you who took the time to send a letter.

Judge Mitch Metropulus stated that this crime was "one of extreme violence" showing "total lack of control of one's impulses".

While our main interest in this case was that his violent crime not go unpunished, we cannot forget the other victim in this crime, a young child, who may or may not have witnessed such extreme violence towards an innocent being, and who now more than ever, needs competent and loving care.

Please write the judge to thank him for taking this act seriously and to be sure that the child receives proper supervision and care.

Judge Mitchell Metropulos, Circuit Court Branch 3, 320 S. Walnut Street, Appleton, WI 54911

Rants and Raves
Rave! Massachussets votes to end greyhound racing.
Massachusetts voters yesterday embraced a ballot question to end greyhound racing in the state, rejecting track owners' arguments that the ban would cost jobs at a time of economic hardship in favor of protecting dogs from harm. Read rest of the story here.

Rave! Hilldale Sentry Puts an End to Its Live Lobster Tank
A thumbs up to Hilldale Sentry for taking the compassionate route and discontinuing their live lobster tank. Alliance for Animals members were the voices for the animals who could not speak for themselves. A store representative said today that "due to public pressure and the feelings of some of our animal rights customers in particular," they no longer sell live lobsters. Next time you're at Sentry, please be sure to thank them for putting an end to the live lobster tank. Defnintely a step in the right direction.

Rant! New York Can Keep Brett Favre Ex-Packer quarterback Brett Favre left a dead animal he had shot in the locker of a Jets teammate. "Some teammates believe it was a wild turkey, but regardless, they all gathered around Barton’s locker and engaged in fits of laughter. The dead animal was inside a bag that was filled with blood and guts." What an idiot.
