NOTE (updated 9/21/17): Since this post was published, Steven Pirus has now been charged with five counts of animal mistreatment– four counts for the two dogs and two cats who perished in the explosion and one count for the dog who was badly injured, and was euthanized.

Alliance for Animals would like to thank all of you who sent letters to D.A. Ozanne asking him to include animal mistreatment to the charges.  Please take a minute to thank him for not overlooking the five other victims of Pirus’s horrible crimes.

In his effort to cover up the murder of his wife, Steven Pirus rigged a gas line in his house to leak and eventually explode in a fireball. Then he left, leaving his three dogs (pictured below) and two cats (one pictured below) behind. See channel 3000 news report.

Please write a polite note or email to Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne asking him to charge Steven Pirus with five counts of mistreating animals.

A neighbor reported that two of the dogs came out of the house after the explosion but were so badly injured that they were euthanized. Little mention of the animals appears in any of the area news reports.

Wisc statute 951.02, “Mistreating animals,” states: “No person may treat any animal, whether belonging to the person or another, in a cruel manner.”

Chapter 951 defines “cruel” as: “causing unnecessary and excessive pain or suffering or unjustifiable injury or death.”

The maximum penalty for violating Wisc. 951.02 is a paltry $500, but failing to charge Pirus with the intentional murder of these animals would be a wholesale dismissal of their pain and suffering.

Please speak up for animals everywhere in Wisconsin by urging Dane County District Attorney Ozanne to charge Steven Pirus with five counts of mistreating animals.
